Back in the 1970's and 1980's, Sesame Street had fantastic clips of breastfeeding moms and their babies in their shows. My friend and fellow author Lani has the clips at her post Bring Breastfeeding Back to the Street. Take a minute to visit these clips, and see how lovely they are.
Now, WHY, I ask you, do we not teach our children what breastfeeding is on Sesame Street anymore? We have letters, numbers, emotions, even death (RIP dear Mr. Hooper!) on Sesame Street, but in the 1990's, the "Street" replaced breastfeeding clips with bottle-feeding ones, and it has stayed that way ever since.
Without knowledge of and exposure to breastfeeding, our future generation will still hold the misguided notion that breastfeeding is inherently private and slightly strange or even sexual in nature (which it's not). I firmly believe that not only should moms (including celebs) nurse in public if they need to, but that breastfeeding should not be censored from books, television, or Sesame Street.
What do you think about bring breastfeeding back into children's shows?
If you feel so inclined, please take the few seconds it takes to sign the petition that Lani began to Bring Breastfeeding Back to the "Street"
We love Sesame Street, and we love Breastfeeding. Let's bring them together again, for the good of our kids and their future children-to-be.
