This year, I resolve. . .

. . . to love my mistakes.

Contrition and compassion are totally the New Perfect.

It's fantastic to have goals, and important to be organized and proactive. But perfect? Not going to happen. So I'm not even going to "go there" anymore!

I was reading Making the Best of Mistakes over at Fine and Fair  and sympathized so congruently with what she had to say about making mistakes and making the best of them. And then, when I commented, I fell deeply madly in love with what I wrote:

It's not about the mistakes that we make but about how we treat the mistakes that we make that defines the way our children see and learn from us. With compassion for ourselves, realistic expectations, and honest apology and contrition, we teach our children much more than if we were perfect every day of our lives.

So as we greet a New Year, I'm saying bye-bye to perfection as a goal (can I really do that? Only time will tell!) and inviting compassion and contrition in to my life full force. I've already experienced what compassion can do for me when I really dedicate myself to it. Maybe enjoying acts of contrition in daily life instead of dreading them will help me to be more present in the practice of compassion.

Oh, and I've resolved to drink 8 glasses of water per day as well. Because I need to have a tangible,
totally achievable resolution, too ;)

  1. I fell deeply in your with comment too. ;) I'm so glad I read this today, I was just being a little rough on myself for not being present enough with my daughter this morning. She's napping now, so I'm going to forgive myself and move forward by having an awesome afternoon and evening with her! <3
